Celebrities are mad that no one at Instagram will verify their accounts

KIm Karadashian selfie Chrissy Teigen John Legend grammys 2015

Celebs are P.O.'d after Instagram announced it would no longer be verifying accounts, The New York Post reports.

Verification on Instagram, much like on Twitter, gives your account a little blue check mark to prove to other users that this account is the real deal. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Leonardo DiCaprio are among the verified.

But now, Instagram is backing off from this practice, so celebrities, brands, and noted public figures are SOL.

Instagram

According to the Post, "...sources say Instagram, owned by Facebook, ran into “serious legal problems” over its verification process and has been forced to pause it. Some suspect Twitter, which also has a verification system, had an issue with Instagram’s."

A pointed message on the Instagram "help page" reads: “It’s not currently possible to request a verified badge.”

The Post reports that current"unverified Instagram users include Julia Roberts,Charlize TheronKatie Holmes and Kate Hudson."

Cadillac Oscars ad

Good morning. Kick off your week by catching up on all the important advertising stories.

1. Lego stole the show at the Oscars last night. Tegan and Sara performing "Everything Is Awesome" and dancers handing out Lego Oscars to celebrities helped it become the most-mentioned brand on Twitter during the awards show on Sunday.

2. Apple aired an iPad ad during the Oscars. It tugs on the heartstrings.

3. Two dozen millennials explain why they're obsessed with Snapchat and how they use it. We found out how often they use it and which features they use.

4. A trio of emerging YouTube celebrities called "The Kloons" are on the edge of internet stardom. They have amassed more than 217,000 subscribers.

5. Yelp is suing two companies who claim they can help businesses get more positive reviews. In a blog post, Yelp says "reputation management" or "small business marketing" agencies offering to help businesses remove negative reviews or gain more positive reviews are scams.

6. Celebrities are mad nobody at Instagram will verify their accounts. Instagram is backing off from adding verified badges, although it's not clear why.

7. These are 15 of the most important people at Apple. Here are all the people, beyond Tim Cook, that keep the company running.

The company's losses widened from $2.2 million in the year-ago quarter to $20.5 million, operating expenses doubled, and revenue growth missed its own estimates.

9. Cadillac launched brand ads during the Oscars, designed to show how it is thinking differently, CNET reports. The ads featured stories from people such as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, "Boyhood" director Richard Linklater, and fashion designer Jason Wu.

It's common for wealthy tech employees to become startup investors once they've made it big.

But there's also a growing connection between the world of tech and the world of food. That's partly because the San Francsico Bay Area is both the capital of the current tech boom and one of the leading culinary centers in the world.

Tech investors and execs have been investing in all kinds of restaurants, from boutique coffee shops to salad chains.

Sequoia Capital, a VC firm that's backed Apple, Google, and Oracle, invested in grilled cheese restaurant The Melt in 2011. Sequoia reportedly invested at least $10 million.

San Francisco-based Philz Coffee just finished raising $15 million in a round led by Summit Partners, which has invested in Uber.

Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom, Twitter co-founder Evan Williams, and Twitter investor Chris Sacca poured nearly $26 million into Blue Bottle, a boutique coffee chain, in early 2014..

Kim Kardashian allegedly spends $100,000 a year to employ a 'professional selfie retoucher'

Kim Kardashian

A new OK! magazine story says Kim Kardashian is spending $100,000 to keep a professional photo retoucher on call to perfect the selfies she posts to Instagram.

The Kardashians have long defended themselves against rumors that they alter all of their photos, but this source tells OK! magazine "Kim used to ask a friend to fix up photos, but it would take hours. She finally decided to hire a pro who can be on call 24/7."

The source also says that part of the job is deleting every trace of the "before photos."

Early last year, Kim made headlines after Twitter and Instagram users noticed some flubs in an uploaded photo that made it pretty clear the pic had been altered.

Kim Kardashian Butt GIF

You can see in the GIF, created by New York Magazine's The Cut, that the photo had clearly been manipulated before it was posted to Instagram.

Business Insider reported that a Photoshop expert explained the discrepancies, noting the "curved door frame" and "distortion in the floor."

The photo had gone viral, racking up half a million likes within days of it being published to social media.

At the time, a rep for Kardashian denied that she had altered the photo in any way. But looking at the GIF, the writing seems to be on the wall.

While OK!'s story is only going by the details given by one unnamed source, it's not the craziest thing in the world to think that Kardashian may deem it necessary to have a hired pro to do her selfie work.

Don't forget, taking selfies is part of Kardashian's business and brand. In April, she will release her book,"Selfish"— 352 pages of her selfies.

This is the only photo from the Snapchat Story, which we watched earlier today, that was appropriate to post here.

Instagram is going to let brands advertise and link to mobile websites

$

IMG_5606.PNG

Instagram is finally going to allow brands to place ads in the app that can link to mobile sites. It announced Wednesday that businesses advertising on the photo-sharing platform will be able to use a new service called "carousel ads." The feature will let people who like what they see swipe left to get more content, which will eventually lead to an option to visit an external site through the Instagram browser.

It's a big deal for Instagram because up to now the app didn't allow brands to link to external content beyond one link in their bio. The social network is self-contained — users post photos/videos, like and comment on photos/videos, and that's about it. Instagram is massive and immensely popular. But part of its charm is that its media is "constrained." You cannot use it for spam photos, because you cannot link those photos to other sites.

Instagram's introduction of the new format changes that. It says it's "a new way for brands to share more images with people interested in their posts." Carousel ads also function like magazine spreads by adding extra "pages" or images for users to look at beyond the simple square that most users get.

"A car company might share an array of different features of a vehicle and provide a link to learn more about the new model," Instagram said. Users can still scroll past ads. Carousel ads launches today, but on a limited basis. The platform is still experimenting with what works best.

Instagram explained that people will start seeing ads in the coming weeks. And added: "There's no details on the cost structure other than that they will be bought the same way Instagram photo ads are, on a CPM (cost per mille/1,000) basis." The model is also only available, currently, to select partners since it's still in its early stages.

Instagram says that brands have been asking for this for a while. "They want more ways to tell their stories," the company says.

Here are Instagram's current stats:

The 'Rich Dogs of Instagram' are living the dream

$

You've probably heard about the Rich Kids of Instagram, the blog that aggregates photos from the world's richest young Instagram users. Nothing is too outlandish or flashy for these kids— pictures of bottles of Champagne, diamond-encrusted Rolexes, and private yachts are posted almost daily. It's next-level humblebragging

Now, there's a parody Instagram account for their wealthy puppy equivalents too.

Kaylin Pound started the "Rich Dogs of Instagram" account two weeks ago.

 on

"I had to write a story for Elite Daily about those Romanian Instagrammers that poked fun at the Rich Kids Of Instagram by recreating a bunch of their photos," she told Business Insider.

 on

"This made me wonder if anyone had ever thought of making a parody account with dogs, and to my surprise no one had done it before so I made The Rich Dogs Of Instagram account."

 on

Pound has been working for Elite Daily since November — before the millennial news website was acquired by the Daily Mail. She says when she started the account, which features pictures of dogs appearing to live exorbitant lifestyles, she just aggregated pictures she found on Instagram. But now "thanks to all of the people that have been sending me images, I am now strictly posting submissions," she says.

 on

Pound says she's "very surprised" by how many followers she's amassed in a relatively short period of time. She's up to 13,700 followers currently and gains another 1,000 every day, and she intends to keep the account going.

 on

Pound, who has two Westies named Nuckles and Nellie, is using Rich Dogs of Instagram for a charitable cause too.

 on

"Since it has gained so much press attention in such a short time, I decided that I wanted to use it for something other than a good laugh, so I am teaming up with Posh Pets Rescue in NYC to help them spread the word about giving back to dogs that aren’t as fortunate as The Rich Dogs of Instagram," she says.

How to hide the Instagram filters you don't use

If you're an avid Instagram user, chances are you have some filters that are your favorites and some that go untouched.

Instagram makes it simple to hide and re-arrange filters that you don't use, and it only takes a moment.

First you'll need to make sure you have the latest version of Instagram on your phone, which you can download here. Next, just snap a photo or choose one from your camera roll, which will bring up the traditional list of filters.

To hide a filter, just tap and hold down a finger on the one you want to remove. You'll now be able to drag it upwards into the "Drag to hide" box above.

Instagram hiding filters

You can also use the same method to drag and re-arrange filters; just drag the filter you'd like to move over to the position you'd prefer it to be in the carousel and drop it in.

There's also an alternative method that lets you accomplish the same thing but in list form. If you scroll all the way to the right, you'll see a "Manage" button. Tap that, and you'll be able to hide and re-order your filters without dragging and dropping.

Instagram filters

You can download the latest version of Instagram for iPhone over at the App Store, and for Android over at the Google Play store.

New York City's 'Outlaw Instagrammer' will leave the city when he turns 18

$

17-year-old Humza Deas dares to go where most of us never would.

As one of New York City's "outlaw Instagrammers"— a name given to a group of young photographers by a recent New York magazine article— Deas scales the city's tallest buildings and bridges to get some truly jaw-dropping shots.

 on

Most of these locations are extremely dangerous and even illegal to access. The outlaw Instagrammers usually take their photos at night so as to avoid trouble. Still, the photographers — most of whom are minors — have certainly gotten the attention of both the public and the police.

When a mysterious white flag appeared at the top of the Brooklyn Bridge in July of last year, Deas' followers immediately posted thousands of messages to his Instagram page, asking if he was responsible for the stunt. Heas attempted to clear his name by doing a video interview with a local TV station, but it ended up backfiring, and he was questioned by police.

According to a source who recently heard Deas speak at an Instagram marketing event, Deas now seems to believe he's on the NYPD's radar, though he's never been arrested for trespassing.

Deas told Business Insider that he plans to leave New York City at the end of March, shortly after his 18th birthday.

"I feel I will be 90% done capturing the city through my perspective and in order to grow not only as an artist, but as a person too I think it's time for me to leave the nest and travel the world," he said. "I think if I want to accomplish my dreams then this is something I need to do. I will truly miss this this city."

Deas says that he'll head to Los Angeles first, then San Francisco and Miami. After that, he'll travel internationally. He'll be taking the same adrenaline-pumping photos at every stop along the way.

 on

"I have big things planned for my leave, going out with a bang!" Deas told Business Insider.

He said to stay tuned to his Instagram page, adding that he plans to debut a video on the Nasdaq screen in Times Square on March 11, the day before his birthday.

10 stylish people you should be following on Instagram

$
0
0

As we mentioned yesterday, great personal style takes time, experimentation, and a rock solid sense of self.  It can take years, and a lot of misses, to develop a refined sense of style that is all your own. But once you arrive, there is no denying the authenticity of good taste.

Here are 10 people on Instragram that, in my opinion, have developed a world-class style.

Julien Landa

Julien Landa is a rancher and leather craftsman living in rural Netherlands. On the low, he’s also one of the premiere collectors of vintage Ralph Lauren. He specifically loves worn-in RRL workwear, which makes perfect sense given his look and lifestyle. His instagram page is like an unpublished Ralph Lauren lookbook spanning the past 20 years.

Mr. Raro

A photo posted by Mr.Raro (@mararomrraro) on Mar 2, 2015 at 8:09am PST

Mr. Raro is the CEO and designer of the Mararo boutique in Milan. He cuts no corners in the production of his handmade bespoke garments, which he wears proudly throughout the streets of Milan. His look is full-on, old world elegance. I would call it European Royalty inspired tailoring, with the heavily roped shoulders, saturated colors, pocket watches, and all that.

JS Vann

A photo posted by Sox (@dirtysox) on Feb 10, 2015 at 2:19pm PST

Our friend JS Vann, aka Dirty Sox, aka Mr. Couture Streetwear, aka The Colorful Suit Man, is the coolest young tailor in Toronto. He recently opened a downtown design studio, where he cuts everything from custom suits to custom quilted joggers. His ability to blend hood-inspired streetwear with classic tailored menswear is always tastefully entertaining.

Sarah Ann Murray

There isn’t a woman on earth who wears menswear better than Rake Magazine editor Sarah Ann Murray. She makes classic menswear look sexier than ever because she’s well-versed in bespoke tailoring and isn’t afraid to push the envelope with things like colors, patterns and accessories.

Khaled Nasr

Our friend Khaled Nasr (as featured here and here) is a self-made man, an engineer, a serial entrepreneur, and an all-around boss. He doesn’t work in menswear, but he makes so many trips to Naples to buy perfectly cut soft-shouldered jackets from his favorite tailors at Sciamat, that he’s become known in the business as a purveyor of fine tailoring.

Fabio Attanasio

Fabio is an Italian menswear blogger who’s tagline is “fostering the rebirth of a sartorial classicism in menswear”. He’s does a good job showcasing high-end bespoke tailoring in a light-hearted tone and, like any menswear blogger, he loves showing off his thoughtfully curated outfit photos.

Jason Andrew

Our friend Jason Andrew, the best-dressed speech pathologist in New York City, is one smooth cat. He doesn’t work in the menswear business either, but loves clothes and uses personal style to his advantage in his medical career. His instagram account can be used as a how-to guide for layering.

Alessandro Squarzi

Alessandro Squarzi owns a prominent showroom in Milan and represents some premiere brands throughout Europe and America. His job is to curate what’s cool in the market and stand behind products that he believes in. His less-is-more approach to style should be used as an example for anyone looking to refine their look.

 Angel Ramos

A photo posted by @angelbespoke on Dec 20, 2014 at 1:32pm PST

Angel, aka Mr. Sprezzy, is a good friend of mine and a style icon in his own right. The fellow “Best Dressed Man in America” turned his notoriety into a successful custom clothing business based around his signature American-meets-Italian aesthetic.

The Snob Report

Truthfully, I don’t even know who this guy is, because he doesn’t show his face on his instagram. What he does show, however, is an impressively large closet and an absolute mastery when it comes to pattern-mixing and color combos. His jacket/shirt/tie/pocket square combinations are top notch.

Instagram's CEO and founder Kevin Systrom and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver threw an exclusive, invite-only party in London on Monday night at a venue in the shadow of St. Paul's Cathedral.

It's the second annual party the photo app has thrown in the UK, which aims to celebrate all the Instagram stars that have made it such a success in the region. Following rumors that Taylor Swift insured her legs for $40 million, Swift joked on Instagram that her pet cat Meredith needs to pay up after scratching her across her left thigh.

 on

"GREAT WORK MEREDITH I WAS JUST TRYING TO LOVE YOU AND NOW YOU OWE ME 40 MILLION DOLLARS," Swift captioned her photo.

The Daily Mail reports that the rumor of the $40 million insurance policy was first written about in The National Enquirer, where a source explained "It seems like a ludicrous sum, but if something was to happen to her legs, Taylor wouldn't be able to give her signature stage performances. Her $200 million career would be in big trouble."

Taylor, who has named her cats Meredith Gray and Olivia Benson after her favorite TV characters, often uploads photos of her cats' antics to Instagram for her millions of fans to see.

While Swift has not confirmed the rumors of the leg insurance, it's definitely very on-brand of her to make a mockery of these things publicly. She recently posted a photo of herself baring her midriff in a bikini to quell the longtime rumor that she didn't have a belly button.
